New York (US) issues solicitations for 4 GW of renewable power

The US State of New York has announced two large solicitations for 4,000 MW of renewable power capacity, including 2,500 MW of offshore wind projects and 1,500 MW of onshore renewable projects for the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) and the New York Power Authority (NYPA).

Ukraine adopts law on renewable feed-in tariff reduction

The Ukrainian parliament has voted a law on feed-in tariff (FiTs) reductions for renewable power generation. FiTs will be cut by 15% for solar parks and by 7.5% for wind parks commissioned between 2015 and 2019 and by 2.5% for both types of projects commissioned as of 1 January 2020. Once the law signed by the President, the FiT cut will be effective as of 1 July 2020.

European Commission clears Ireland’s renewable support scheme

The European Commission has approved Ireland’s Renewable Electricity Support Scheme (RESS), considering that it complied with EU State aid rules without unduly distorting competition. Moreover, the scheme is expected to help Ireland meet its national target to reach a share of 70% of renewables in its power mix by 2030.

Iberdrola raises bid for Australian renewable group Infigen again

The Spanish energy group Iberdrola has increased again its bid for Australia’s largest renewable producer Infigen Energy, from AUD0.89 (US$0.64) per share to AUD 0.92 (US$0.66) per share, raising the offer to AUD893m (US$638m), on the condition that it acquires another 13% in the company before 30 July 2020.

Petrobras completes sale of TAG gas pipeline (Brazil) to Engie and CDPQ

The Brazilian oil and gas company Petrobras has concluded the sale of its remaining 10% stake in Transportadora Associada de Gás (TAG) to Engie and Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec (CDPQ) for BRL 1.1bn (US$206m). TAG is active in gas transportation, operating a 4,500 km gas pipeline system in the North and Northeast regions of Brazil, which can deliver up to 75 mcm/d (over 27 bcm/year). Petrobras, which used to be the sole owner in TAG, sold a 90% stake in the company to Engie and CDPQ in June 2019. The two companies will now jointly own 100% of TAG.

Global gas flaring rose by 3% in 2019 to record levels

According to the World Bank, the total volume of gas flared in the world increased by 3% from 145 bcm in 2018 to 150 bcm in 2019, mainly due to three countries where gas flaring surged, namely the United States (+23%), Venezuela (+16%) and Russia (+9%). Gas flaring also rose in conflict-affected countries such as Syria (+35%, despite a flat oil production) and Venezuela (+16% despite a 40% fall in oil production). The four largest gas flaring countries – Russia, Iraq, the United States, and Iran – accounted for 45% of all global gas flaring over the 2017-2019 period.

Gazprom Neft and Shell will jointly develop O&G blocks in Russian Artic

Gazprom Neft and Shell have signed a joint venture (JV) agreement to study and develop the Leskinsky and Pukhutsyayakhsky license blocks on the Gydan Peninsula in the Russian Arctic. Each partner will have a 50% stake in the JV, and the transaction is expected to close in 2020 after receiving the necessary regulatory and corporate approvals.

NEK is considering developing 1 GW of wind projects in Ghana

The Swiss renewable power project developer NEK is considering developing up to 1,000 MW of wind power capacity in Ghana. The company already has major concessions in the country. In a first phase, it would develop 160 MW, followed by 75 MW. NEK plans to build a 200 MW wind project in Amlakpo and a 225 MW wind project in Ayitepa, whose power generation would be sold to the state-owned Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

CFE (Mexico) plans to tender 8 CCGT power projects by March 2021

Mexico’s state-owned power company Comision Federal de Electricidad (CFE) plans to tender the construction of 8 CCGT power projects by the end of March 2021. The first tender would be issued on 18 August 2020 for the 164 MW Baja California Sur CCGT project and would be followed by a tender each month until the tender of a 455 MW unit for the Norte-4 (Lerdo) CCGT project on 23 March 2021. Six other CCGT projects will be concerned, including 527 MW Baja California IV Cerro Prieto, 521 MW Mérida, 752 MW Riviera Maya, 1,086 MW Tuxpan Phase 1,875 MW Salamanca, and 422 MW Tula II-1.
