ČEZ and Czech Republic sign agreement on Dukovany-5 nuclear project

The Czech government has signed agreements with the state-owned power utility ČEZ for the development of a new 1.2 GW unit at the Dukovany nuclear power plant. The agreement encompasses the overall general framework of the €6bn project and its initial phase; it will include a tender and ČEZ will have a preferred list of suppliers (by 2022) and will sign a contract with one supplier by 2024.

Iberdrola commissions 714 MW East Anglia ONE offshore wind project (UK)

Iberdrola’s affiliate ScottishPower Renewables and Macquarie’s Green Investment Group (GIG) have completed the 714 MW East Anglia ONE offshore wind project in the United Kingdom. The £2.5 bn (€2.8bn) wind park is now fully operational.

In August 2019, ScottishPower Renewables sold 40% of the East Anglia One project to GIG; according to the transaction terms, ScottishPower Renewables will receive £1.9bn (€2.2bn) once the park is completed. The project produced its first power and was connected to the power grid in September 2019.

PKN Orlen moves ahead with 1.2 GW offshore wind project (Poland)

The Polish oil and gas company PKN Orlen has submitted an environmental report for a 1.2 GW offshore wind project to be developed in the Baltic Sea to the Regional Directorate for Environmental Protection in Gdańsk (Poland). PKN Orlen’s subsidiary Baltic Power holds a licence to construct wind power plants with an aggregate capacity of up to 1.2 GW in an area of approximately 131 km2 off Choczewo and Łeba.

Repsol (Spain) buys renewables assets in Chile despite €1.5bn write-offs

The Spanish energy group Repsol has signed an agreement with Grupo Ibereólica Renovables to create a 50-50 joint venture (JV) in Chile to operate and build over 2,600 MW of renewable power projects by 2030. The JV’s resources will allow the development of 3 wind and 2 solar projects totalling more than 1,600 MW, of which 110 MW is already under construction and 1,500 MW is in advanced stages of development and expected to be operational in 2025. In addition, another 1,000 MW could be developed in the northern regions of Antofagasta and Atacama by 2030.

PipeChina starts building southern part of China-Russia East gas pipeline

China Oil & Gas Piping Network Corporation (PipeChina) has started building the southern portion of the 5,111-km China-Russia East natural gas pipeline, as a Chinese extension of the Power of Siberia gas transmission project delivering Russian gas to China. The southern portion begins at Yongqing in the northern province of Hebei and ends at Shanghai in eastern China. The China-Russia natural gas pipeline, which will have a capacity of 18.9 bcm/year, is expected to be launched in 2025.

Tanzania launches preparatory phases for 2 hydropower projects (580 MW)

Tanzanian state-owned utility Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO) has awarded a contract to Multiconsult Norge with Norplan Tanzania and Tanzania Photomap as subcontractors, to provide consultancy services for the Rumakali Hydropower and Transmission Line Project (222 MW) and for the Ruhudji Hydropower and Transmission Line Project in Tanzania (358 MW). Multiconsult Norge will review and update of the feasibility study, conceptual design and preparation of tender documents and conducting environmental and social impact assessment study for the two projects.

189 MW wind project planned in the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights

Enlight Renewable Energy has secured financing for a 189 MW wind project in the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights, at the border with Syria and Lebanon. A consortium of banks and financial institutions led by Bank Hapoalim will lend ILS1.05bn (US$308m) to the ILS1.25bn project (US$366m), while Enlight and its partner will invest the remaining ILS200m (US$59m). The company has already secured building approvals for the project, which will consist of 39 GE turbines, and still awaits approval from the state-owned power utility Israel Electric Corporation (IEC) to start construction.

Red Rock will raise Inch Cape offshore wind project capacity to 1 GW (UK)

Red Rock Power has received the approval from the Scottish government to increase the capacity of its Inch Cape offshore wind project off east Scotland (United Kingdom) from 700 MW to 1 GW by replacing existing turbines by newest and larger turbines. The project will consist of 72 offshore wind turbines. It is expected to enter construction in 2020. It received planning permission in principle for the onshore transmission works and approval of a new alternative offshore proposal in 2019. Red Rock Power is an affiliate of Chinese state-run group SDIC.

Kuwait commissions gas pipeline feeding Al-Zour refinery project

Kuwait Integrated Petroleum Industries Company (KIPIC), an affiliate of the national oil company Kuwait Petroleum Corporation (KPC), has commissioned the gas pipeline that will feed its 615,000 bbl/d Al-Zour Refinery project. The US$16bn refinery project will entail two other separate facilities apart from the refinery, i.e. LNG processing facilities and a petrochemicals complex. The refinery is expected to start operating in 2021.

EWEC (UAE) awards a 2 GW solar project to a TAQA-led consortium

The Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) has awarded the 2 GW Al Dhafra Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Independent Power Producer (IPP) project, which will be located in Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates, UAE) to a consortium led by Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (TAQA) and Masdar (60% together), with partners EDF and JinkoPower (40% together). The winning consortium had offered a tariff of AED 4.97 fils/kWh (US$1.35c/kWh) on a levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) basis.
