Saudi Arabia shelves US$3.2bn oil supply deal with Pakistan

A November 2018 arrangement between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia to supply US$3.2bn worth of Saudi oil on deferred payments expired in June 2020 and is still to be renewed, as Saudi Arabia would be awaiting Pakistan’s request to renew the arrangement. Pakistan was expecting to import US$1bn worth of oil in the fiscal year 2020-2021, which started in July 2020, but Saudi Arabia is yet to renew the deal. The US$3.2bn Saudi oil facility, which was part of the US$6.2bn Saudi Arabian package announced in November 2018, had the provision of renewal for two more years.

Forecasts

Algeria’s gas exports expected to decrease by 40% over 2020-2025

According to the energy minister, Algeria’s natural gas exports are expected to decrease by more than 40% between 2020 (45 bcm) and 2025 (26 bcm) due to stagnant production, rising domestic demand and insufficient investment. In 2019, exports reached 42.7 bcm.

CNNC connects Tianwan-5 nuclear unit to the grid (China)

The Chinese state-run nuclear group China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) has connected to the grid the fifth unit of the Tiawan nuclear project, located in the Jiangsu province of China. The Unit 5 consist of a Chinese-designed ACPR1000 pressurised water reactor (PWR) rated 1,080 MWe. The project completed fuel loading into the reactor in July 2020 and achieved first criticality earlier in August 2020.

Switzerland starts synchronising a 900 MW hydro plant to the grid

A first pump turbine of the 900 MW Nant de Drance pumped-storage hydropower plant in the canton of Valais (Switzerland) has been synchronised to the grid. The plant comprises six pump turbines linked to engine generators, each with a capacity of 150 MW. The project will be fully operational by the end of 2021. The project, which required a investment of CHF2.2bn (€2bn), is developed by Alpiq (39%), SBB (36%), IWB (15%) and FMV (10%).

Tata Projects builds a 500 kV power transmission line in Thailand

Tata Projects (part of the Indian Tata Group) has completed an important 110-km stretch of the 200-km Surathani-Phuket power transmission line project in Thailand. This project will bring additional electricity to Phuket. Prior to this Surathani – Phuket transmission line project, TATA Project led consortium had successfully executed an 80-km stretch of 500 kV Roi Et 2 – Chaiyaphum 2 Transmission Line project in August 2019.

The EBRD plans to finance a 500 MW wind power project in Egypt

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development plans to lend US$50m to fund the construction of a 500 MW wind power project in the Gulf of Suez, approximately 40 km of Ras Ghareb in Egypt. The project, which requires a US$560m investment, is developed by a consortium between Engie (35%), a consortium of Toyota Tsusho Corporation and Eurus Energy Holdings Corporation Consortium (holding collectively 40%) and Orascom Construction (25%).

Egypt aims to reach 20% of renewable power generation by 2022, and 42% by 2035.

Vietnam’s updated NDC targets 9% GHG emissions cut by 2030

The government of Vietnam has updated its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC). The country intends to reduce to its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 9% by 2030 compared to the business-as-usual (BAU) scenario, equivalent to 83.9 Mt of CO2eq, using its domestic resources. The new target is 1 percentage point higher than the previous objective set in 2015.

Spain allocates €300m for the energy rehabilitation of buildings

The Spanish government has allocated €300m to the Building Energy Rehabilitation Programme, which will subsidise changes to the thermal envelope, replacement of boilers with renewable options or improvements in lighting efficiency of buildings built before 2007. Between 25% and 35% of the cost of the renovation will be subsidised. In the case of vulnerable consumers, an additional 15% subsidy is provided. The program will be coordinated by the Institute for Energy Savings and Diversification (IDAE), dependent on the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge.
