Angola has ratified the Paris Agreement

The Angola parliament has ratified the Paris Agreement, which was signed in 2015. The country’s late ratification was due to the need to develop tools to monitor greenhouse gas emissions and delays in the political process. In the meantime, Angola has formulated a climate policy. In addition, the country created a climate observatory and a national monitoring system that provides up-to-date emission data.

The US will authorise oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge

The US authorities plan to authorise drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (Alaska), with the objective to auction off oil and gas exploration rights. The first auction could be held on 22 December 2021. The plan includes the construction of four airstrips and major well pads, 280 km of roads, vertical supports for pipelines, a seawater treatment plant, a barge landing and storage site. According to the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), it would not pose an undue threat to the wildlife that depends on the refuge for survival.

The EC clears Total’s acquisition of the Emile Huchet CCGT plant (France)

The European Commission has approved the acquisition of Kernaman, a fully owned affiliate of EPH, by Total Direct Energie (France). Kernaman, which was sold by Uniper to EPH in July 2019, owns two combined cycle gas turbine units, Emile Huchet 7 and Emile Huchet 8, with a combined capacity of 866 MW, located in Moselle (eastern France). Following the deal between Uniper France and EPH in December 2018, Total signed an agreement with EPH to acquire the Emile Huchet plant in 2020. The two 433 MW CCGT units were commissioned in 2009.

A single consortium is formed to develop the Inga III hydro project (Congo DR)

Six Chinese companies led by China Three Gorges Corporation and Spain-based AEE Power have agreed to form a single consortium to develop the Inga III hydro project in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (Congo DR). The six Chinese companies have a 75% stake in the new consortium, while AEE Power retains a 25% share. The formation of a single entity between the Spanish consortium, which includes AEE Power and ACS, and the China Three Gorges Corporation-led consortium, was requested by the Congolese government.

Barakah-1 nuclear power project (UAE) was connected to the grid

Nawah Energy, in partnership with the Abu Dhabi Transmission and Despatch Company (TRANSCO), a subsidiary of Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (TAQA), has connected Unit 1 of the Barakah nuclear power plant to the UAE’s grid. During the process, the reactor in Unit 1 was integrated and synchronized with the requirements of the UAE’s national electricity transmission grid.

China Huadian picks MingYang turbines for 500 MW offshore project (China)

The state-owned China Huadian Corporation has ordered 37 MySE6.8-158 turbines and 30 MySE8.3-180 turbines from Chinese wind turbine manufacturer MingYang Smart Energy for its 500 MW Yangjiang Qingzhou 3 offshore wind project, off Yangjiang city in southwestern Guangdong Province (China). MingYang’s bid totaled CNY 1878.4m (US$271m).

The Banks Group closes its Bradley surface coal mine (UK)

The Banks Group has stopped extracting coal from the Bradley surface coal mine near Dipton, County Durham (United Kingdom), after plans for an extension were rejected in July 2020 by the Durham County Council. The mine opened in 2018 to produce 500,000t of coal, with approximately 340,000t collected. The company pledged to rehabilitate the land by August 2021.

Central Petroleum plans to develop a 1.3 bcm/year gas pipeline project in Australia

Central Petroleum has signed an agreement with Australian Gas Infrastructure Group (AGIG) and Macquarie Mereenie to develop the 950 km Amadeus to Moomba Gas Pipeline, which would link the Amadeus Basin in the Northern Territory to the Moomba Gas supply hub in South Australia (Australia). The 1.3 bcm/year gas pipeline project is scheduled to enter construction in 2022, with deliveries of first gas in early 2024. A final investment decision is expected in mid-2021.

Central Petroleum’s operated fields in the Amadeus Basin have 5.7 bcm of gas reserves with no agreements set.

A Vestas-led consortium will build a 250 MW wind project in Egypt

The New and Renewable Energy Authority (Egypt) has signed an agreement with a Vestas-led consortium to develop a 250 MW onshore wind project in the Gulf of Suez. The plant, which requires a €228m (US$271m) investment, will be financed within the framework of an umbrella agreement between the Egyptian government and a group of European lenders, which includes the European Commission and the European Investment Bank, as well as the French Development Agency (AFD) and Germany’s KfW. The project is expected to be commissioned in 2023.

The 1.2 GW Forest Wind project (Australia) passed a new milestone

The parliament of Queensland (Australia) has adopted the Forest Wind Farm Development Bill 2020, which aims at facilitating the development of the 1.2 GW Forest Wind project. The text authorises tenure for the project to occur on actively managed exotic pine plantation licence areas in the Toolara, Tuan and Neerdie State forests between Gympie and Maryborough.
