Poland plans may auction 2.2 GW of renewables capacity in 2021

The Polish government has released and submitted for consultation a draft regulation on the maximum amount and value of electricity from renewable energy sources that may be sold by auction in 2021. The country plans to auction 2.2 GW of renewables capacity in 2021, including 1.7 GW of solar, 300 MW of wind, 100 MW of biomass and 50 MW of hydro and biogas.

South Africa seeks proposals for 2 GW of emergency power capacity

The government of South Africa, via its Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE), has issued a request for proposals to procure 2,000 MW of emergency power capacity. Projects under the Risk Mitigation Independent Power Producers Procurement Programme (RMIPPPP) must be fully operational by end-June 2022. The request for proposal is expected to attract investment in the region of ZAR40bn (US$2.3bn).

Iraq intends to produce 7 mb/d of crude oil by 2025 and stop gas flaring

Iraq intends to reach oil production of 7 mb/d, and to stop gas flaring as well as importing fuel from Iran by 2025. The country is also targeting to expand its oil export capacity to 6 mb/d. In 2019, Iraq produced 4.7 mb/d of crude oil, while its oil exports averaged 4.7 mb/d. In addition, its natural gas production reached 9.5 bcm.

Bulgaria buys a 20% stake in the Alexandroupolis LNG terminal project (Greece)

Bulgarian state-owned gas transmission system operator Bulgartransgaz has signed an agreement with Gastrade, a subsidiary of the Greek energy company Copelouzos, to acquire a 20% stake in the Alexandroupolis LNG import terminal project in northern Greece. The transaction is subject to regulatory approvals. Bulgaria seeks to diversify its gas supply, as the country currently imports nearly all its gas consumption from Russia.

Equinor seeks approval to develop 4 GW of offshore wind capacity in Brazil

Equinor Brazil has applied for a license from the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA) to develop two offshore wind projects of 2 GW each. The first project, which is expected to be completed in 2024, would be built on the coast of Rio de Janeiro and the second between the states of Rio de Janeiro and Espírito Santo.

Brazil cuts 2029 electricity demand forecast by 10 GW in 2029 due to Covid

Brazil’s Energy Research Office (EPE), which released the study book of the Decennial Energy Expansion Plan (PDE) 2030, has cut its forecast of maximum electricity demand for 2029 by 10 GW because of the Covid-19 pandemic. In 2030, the maximum demand will be 123 GW, only 34% higher than 2020 estimates. Consequently, EPE recommends cutting the capacity expansion from 26.5 GW to 23 GW over the 2024-2029 period and to 22.3 GW until 2030.

Better Energy starts building a 200 MW solar subsidy-free project in Denmark

The Danish energy company Better Energy has launched the construction of a 200 MW solar project in Holsebro municipality (Denmark). The plant, which is build without subsidies, is owned by Danish company Heathland, and is expected to be commissioned in 2021. As of August 2020, solar accounts for 6% of Denmark’s total installed capacity, with 1 GW.

Iran commissions a 492 MW gas-fired power plant in West Karoun

Iran has commissioned the 492 MW West Karoun gas-fired power plant, located 45 km southwest of Ahvaz, southwestern Iran. The plant has been constructed under a build-own-operate agreement by Iranian company Mapna, with the aim of providing electricity for the joint fields and oil facilities based in the region. As of August 2020, gas accounts for 65% of Iran’s total installed capacity, with 52 GW.

Gazprom receives a US$739m loan from VEB for its Baltic LNG project (Russia)

The Russian state-owned development bank VEB has awarded a RUB55bn (US$739m) loan to Gazprom for its Baltic LNG project in Ust-Luga near Saint Petersburg (Russia). The project is estimated to require RUB 900bn (US$12.1bn) in investments.

Turkey discovers a field with 320 bcm of natural gas in the Black Sea

According to the Turkish authorities, Turkish Petroleum has discovered a field with 320 bcm of natural gas in the Black Sea’s Tuna-1 zone, where the national state-owned oil company has been carrying exploration activities. The Tuna-1 well is located on the seabed at a depth of 2,100 metres. The field is expected to enter production in 2023.

In 2019, Turkey consumed 45 bcm of natural, which were mostly supplied by imports as production is low (0.4 bcm). Imports came mainly from Russia (33.6%), Azerbaijan (21.2%) and Iran (17.1%).
