Spain’s Iberdrola enters the Japanese offshore wind market

The Spanish energy group Iberdrola has entered into an agreement with Macquarie’s Green Investment Group (GIG) to enter the Japanese offshore wind market by acquiring the Japanese renewable project developer Acacia Renewables. The Japanese company currently has two offshore wind projects under development, with a combined capacity of 1.2 GW and that could be operational by 2028.

Czech power utility ČEZ will sell two CHP plants in Poland

The Czech power utility ČEZ has started to divest assets in Poland, launching the sale of five companies including two combined heat and power plants (CHPs) in Poland, namely ČEZ Skawina and ČEZ Chorzow. ČEZ Skawina (installed capacity 330 MWe / 588 MWth) is the second largest provider of heat to Krakow (approximately 25% share of the heat market) and Skawina.

Lithuania’s Ignitis acquires a 170 MW solar portfolio in Poland

The Lithuanian energy group Ignitis has signed an agreement to acquire a portfolio of solar plants in Poland totalling 170 MW from Sun Investment. Under the agreement, Sun Investment will develop the power plants between 2021 and 2023. Revenues from these projects will be secured by 15-year contracts for difference (CfDs) under the Polish auction mechanism. Ignitis Group targets 4 GW of renewable power capacity by 2030.

Malaysia’s TNB buys a 365 MW solar portfolio in the United Kingdom

Vortex Energy, which is owned by the Egyptian investment bank EFG Hermes, has sold a controlling stake in a UK solar portfolio with a total capacity of 365 MW to TNB International, an affiliate of the Malaysian power utility Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) for £500m (€547m). The Vortex III portfolio was acquired in 2017 from TerraForm Power, has an average asset age of 6 years and has PPAs with major European energy companies.

Solar power accounts for 13% of UK’s installed capacity, with 13.6 GW (2019).

Energean has signed two new gas sales and purchase agreements with RH Partnership for a combined 1.4 bcm/year of gas supply from the Karish gas project offshore Israel to RH Partnership’s power plants.

EPH confirms plans to close the Gardanne coal-fired power unit (France)

Gazel Énergie, which is owned by the Czech utility EPH, has officially confirmed its plan to shut down its 590 MW Gardanne-Meyreuil coal-fired power unit by the end of 2020. The unit was due to close in 2022. The power plant currently has 2 operating units, one coal-fired unit (590 MW) and one biomass-fired unit (150 MW).

The share of renewables in the power mix could reach 30% by end-2020 (Australia)

According to Australia’s Clean Energy Regulator, Australia will raise its share of renewable power generation to 30% by the end of 2020. The total capacity delivered under the Renewable Energy Target increased by 24% in 2019, from 5.1 GW in 2018 to 6.3 GW in 2019. This additional capacity took the share of renewables to 25% at the end of 2019. Consequently, the Large-scale Renewable Target of 33,000 GWh of additional renewable energy will be met. This momentum has been maintained in 2020.

Senegal plans a new 2.5 bcm/year gas pipeline to supply power plants

The Senegalese sovereign wealth fund FONSIS is seeking proposals from US companies to carry out a feasibility study to support the development of Senegal’s first major domestic onshore gas pipeline. The project is a 135-155 km onshore gas pipeline, with a capacity of 2.5 bcm/year, that will connect offshore gas fields – initially the Yakaar-Teranga field – to 5 existing thermal power plants that are being converted from heavy fuel oil (HFO) to gas.

The European Commission proposes to cut GHG emissions by 55% in 2030

The European Commission is proposing to raise the 2030 target for greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction from 40% to at least 55% compared to 1990, which would put the European Union on track for meeting its Paris Agreement obligations and for climate neutrality by 2050.

Bulgaria plans to add 2.6 GW of renewable capacity by 2030

The Bulgarian Ministry of Energy has released its draft Sustainable Energy Development Strategy until 2030 with a horizon until 2050. The government projects to maintain coal power plants beyond 2030 and expects the 2 GW Belene nuclear power project is expected to come online only after 2030. The plan targets to add 2,645 MW of renewable capacity, including 2,174 MW of solar, 249 MW of wind and 222 MW of biomass by 2030.
