Denmark launches tender for the 800-1,000 MW Thor offshore wind project

The Danish Energy Agency has launched the tendering process for the Thor offshore wind project, with a capacity of 800-1000 MW. The project, which will be located in the North Sea at least 20 km from the coast. The total investment costs for Thor are estimated at a total of DKK15.5bn (€2.1bn) and the project is expected to be fully commissioned and connected to the grid by 2027 at the latest. The final tender deadline for the tender is expected to be 8 November 2021. The authorization is given for 30 years with the possibility of extension for 5 years.

The Ecuadorian authorities approve Sycar’s LNG import terminal project

The government of Ecuador has authorised the US project development company Sycar and other private companies to import gasoline, natural gas, industrial gas, diesel, jet fuel, avgas, absorbents, and other derivatives in the country. Sycar intends to build an LNG import terminal in Ecuador, which would include a floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) with an initial capacity of 0.5 bcm/year.

South Africa’s Eskom will procure 6.8 GW of solar and wind power from IPPs

The government of South Africa has authorised Eskom to buy at least 6,800 MW of solar and wind power from independent power producers (IPPs) for the years 2022 to 2024. Eskom must get 6,800 MW of wind and solar power, 513 MW from storage, 3,000 MW from gas and 1500 MW from coal. The decision paves the way for the fifth bid window (BW 5) of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPP).

Poland plans to end coal mining in 2049

Following an agreement with coal unions, the Polish government has approved a gradual closure of coal mines, with the last mines to shut in 2049. The first mine to be closed would be the Wujek mine in Katowice, that would be shut down as soon as 2021. In 2049, the last two mines would be shut down, namely the Chwałowice and Jankowice mines in Rybnik. Until then, mining is to be subsidised by the state. The country will unlock funds for coal mining regions, especially Silesia.

US shale producer Devon Energy will merge with peer WPX Energy

The US oil and gas producer Devon Energy will buy its rival WPX Energy for US$2.6bn as it intends to create a leading unconventional oil producer in the United States. Upon completion of the transaction, which has been approved by the boards of both companies and is expected to close in early 2021, Devon shareholders will own approximately 57% of the combined company and WPX shareholders will own approximately 43% of the combined company on a fully diluted basis.

UK’s Crown Estate awards rights for 2.8 GW of offshore wind projects

The Crown Estate has awarded Agreements for Lease (AfL) to 6 proposed offshore wind project extensions in the waters around England and Wales (United Kingdom), which together have the potential to deliver 2.8 GW of new capacity. The consenting processes are now expected to take 3 to 5 years with participation in auctions for a Contract for Difference (CfD) and construction starting thereafter. The wind park extensions could become fully operational towards the end of the decade.

NTPC synchronises a 660 MW coal-fired power unit in Bihar (India)

The Indian state-owned power utility NTPC has synchronised a 660 MW unit at its 3.3 GW supercritical coal-fired project in Barh (Bihar, in eastern India) with the grid, paving the way for its commissioning. The first two 660 MW units have already been commissioned and the remaining two 660 MW units should enter commercial operation in March 2022. The project was initially awarded to Russian company Technopromexport, but the contract was terminated due to delay of the work schedule.

Equinor will develop the 200 mbl Breidablikk oil field offshore Norway

Equinor and partners Petoro, Vår Energi and ConocoPhillips Skandinavia have decided to develop the Breidablikk oil field in the Norwegian North Sea, which is expected to produce 200 mbl. The field requires investments totalling NOK18.6bn (€1.7bn). The consortium awarded two key contracts to Aker Solutions and Wood for a total value of NOK3.3bn (€398m) to develop the project. First oil is expected in the first half of 2024.

Egypt commissions a 4.7 Mt/year refinery in Mostorod region

Egyptian Refining Company (ERC) has inaugurated its 4.7 Mt/year (94,000 bbl/d) refinery project in  Qalioubiya, in the Mostorod region. The project has the capacity to produce 4.7 Mt/year of refined products and high-quality oil derivatives, including 2.3 Mt/year of Euro V diesel and 0.6 Mt/year of jet fuel. Liquid stock products are being sold to the national oil company of Egypt Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation (EGPC) at international prices under a 25-year off-take agreement. The project required an investment of US$3.4bn.
