Brazil’s Supreme Court authorises Petrobras to sell 8 refineries

The Federal Supreme Court of Justice, which is Brazil’s highest appellate court for non-constitutional questions of federal law, has authorised the Brazilian national oil and gas company Petrobras to create subsidiaries to sell 8 refineries, accounting for nearly half of its current refining capacity. The Brazilian Congress was requesting an injunction from the court to suspend the privatisation process.

Elecnor maintains its partnership with Gamesa to build a wind project in Mauritania

The Spanish infrastructure group Elecnor has denied its withdrawal from a consortium with Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (SGRE) to build a 100 MW onshore wind power plant in Boulenouar (Mauritania), 80 km north of Nouadhibou. The SGRE-Elecnor will also be in charge of operations and maintenance over an 11-year period on behalf of the Mauritanian electricity company Somelec.

Chevron completes acquisition of US oil producer Noble Energy

Chevron has completed the acquisition of Noble Energy, following approval by Noble Energy shareholders. In July 2020, Chevron and Noble Energy reached a definitive agreement, under the terms of which Chevron would acquire all of the outstanding shares of Noble Energy in an all-stock transaction valued at US$5bn (US$10.38 per share). Including debt, the total enterprise value is US$13bn. Noble Energy holds low-capital, cash-generating offshore gas assets in Israel and will enhance Chevron’s position in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Lithuania’s Amber Grid will invest €256m over 2020-25 in the gas grid

Lithuania’s National Energy Regulatory Council (NERC) has approved Amber Grid’s ten-year gas transmission network development plan, which aims at diversifying gas supply sources in the country and ensuring the reliability of the grid. Investments in the gas transmission network are planned to reach €229m over the next five years, of which half will be for finalising the gas pipeline interconnection between Lithuania and Poland. Amber Grid could also to connect biomethane production systems and hydrogen transportation technologies to the grid.

Calik Enerji and GE will build a 300 MW CCGT power plant in Senegal

The Senegalese state-owned power utility Senelec and the independent power producer West Africa Energy (15% owned by Senelec) have signed an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract with GE and the Turkish group Calik Enerji to build a 300 MW gas-fired power plant in Cap des Biches, near Rufisque. The project, which requires a XOF220bn (US$395m) investment, is expected to be commissioned in early 2023.

Andritz wins order for the 1.2 GW Pinnapuram hydropower plant (India)

Greenco Energy, an Indian independent power producer (IPP), has selected Andritz to supply electro-mechanical equipment for the 1,200 MW Pinnapuram pumped storage hydropower plant, located in the Kurnool district of the state of Andhra Pradesh (India). The Austrian company will provide design, manufacture, supply, transportation, erection, testing, and commissioning of four 240 MW units, two 120 MW reversible pump units, main inlet valves, and associated auxiliaries.

Ethiopia expects first power from the GERD hydro project in 2021

The Ethiopian government expects the first two turbines (750 MW) of the 6,450 MW Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) to start generating power in late 2021. First power was previously scheduled by end-2020.

Mexico completes last section of the 55 bcm/year Wahalajara gas system

According to the Mexican power utility Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE), the Mexican company Fermaca has commissioned the 388 km-long Villa de Reyes-Aguascalientes-Guadalajara (VAG) gas pipeline. This gas pipeline represents the last section of the 2,150 km-long, 5.3 Bcf/d (55 bcm/year) Wahalajara system, which connects the Waha region, in Texas, United States, to Mexico.

Chile launches tender process for 500 kV HVDC power transmission project

The Chilean parastatal Coordinador Elétrico Nacional (CEN), which coordinates the national electricity system, has published the schedule for the international tender of Kimal-Lo Aguirre HVDC project. The project includes the development of a 1,500-kilometer bipolar direct-current transmission line, connecting the north and center of the Chilean Electricity Grid. It will run in parallel to the alternating current (HVAC) 500 kV Kimal-Cardones-Polpaico line.

Poland will take over nuclear development firm PGE EJ 1 by end-2020

The Polish State Treasury has signed a letter of intent (LoI) with the 57.4% state-owned power utility PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna to acquire 100% of PGE EJ 1, a special purpose vehicle (SPV) in charge of the development of Poland’s first nuclear power plant. PGE EJ 1 is owned by PGE (70%), ENEA, KGHM Polska Miedź and TAURON Polska Energia (10% each). The transaction is expected to close by end-2020.
