Ethiopia plans to unbundle state-owned Ethiopian Electric Power

The Ethiopian government is considering unbundling the national power utility Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP), by separating transmission and generation activities to ensure an equal access of independent power producers (IPPs) to the grid. EEP has an installed capacity of 4.2 GW and owns more than 17,000 km of transmission lines.

Western Australia may shut down 520 MW of coal-fired capacity by 2025

Western Australia’s first Whole of System Plan, which provides a 20-year outlook on the future of the South West Interconnected System (SWIS), foresees that 520 MW to 890 MW of the state’s coal-fired power capacity may face economic closure by 2025. The government plans to shut down the two units of the Muja C coal-fired power plant, which totals 392 MW, in 2022 and 2024.

JERA plans to shut down all inefficient coal power plant by 2030 (Japan)

The Japanese power utility JERA has formulated a roadmap to reach zero CO2 emissions by 2050 and intends to close all inefficient coal-fired power plants (supercritical or less) in Japan by 2030. JERA owns and operates 9.5 GW of coal-fired capacity in Japan, including 2.2 GW of supercritical capacity.

Israel’s OPC Energy acquires US power utility CPV

The Israeli power producer OPC Energy has entered into a sale and purchase agreement (SPA) with Global Infrastructure Management to acquire the US power utility Competitive Power Ventures (CPV) for a total consideration of US$630m. In addition, OPC Energy would pay between US$54-95m for the Three Rivers project, which is currently under construction.

Duke Energy targets 16 GW of renewable capacity by 2025 (US)

The US power utility Duke Energy has pledged to double its renewable portfolio output to 16 GW by 2025, and to 40 GW for regulated utilities by 2050. In addition, the company plans to add more than 11 GW of energy storage capacity by 2050 and to retire all coal-only units in North Carolina and South Carolina by 2030. Duke Energy operates 15 coal-only units in North Carolina and South Carolina, with a total capacity of 7.2 GW. The company will thus accelerate its coal exit, as it has already retired 50 coal-fired power units totalling more than 6.5 GW since 2010.

Mainstream Renewable Power plans 1 GW offshore wind project in Vietnam

Mainstream Renewable Power, in partnership with the Phu Cuong Group, is seeking approval for raising the capacity of the Phu Cuong Soc Trang phase 2 offshore wind project in Vietnam from 400 MW to 1,000 MW. The first 200 MW of the 400 MW phase 1 secured authorisation in June 2020; it is scheduled to enter construction in 2021 and commissioning is expected in 2023.

China Energy commissions a 2 GW coal-fired power plant (Indonesia)

The second 991 MW unit of the 1,982 MW Java-7 coal-fired power project has started commercial operations in Indonesia. The US$1.9bn supercritical power project is developed by PT Shenhua Guohua Pembangkitan Jawa Bali (PT SGPJB), a consortium of China Energy (70%) and PT PLN’s subsidiary PT Pembangkitan Jawa Bali (30%), in the Bojonegara district in the Banten province. The first unit was commissioned in December 2019 and the project is expected to generate up ot 15 TWh/year.

US FERC clears restart of MVP gas pipeline project’s construction

The US Federal Energy Regulation Commission (FERC) has authorised Mountain Valley Pipeline (MVP) to continue the construction of its gas pipeline project in light of a new assessment of its impacts on certain species. The 1.9 bcf/d (20 bcm/year) gas pipeline project will link Wetzel County (West Virginia) to Pittsylvania County (Virginia).

Bulgaria could select US technology for unit 7 at Kozloduy nuclear plant

The Bulgarian government is considering selecting US technology for a 7th nuclear reactor at the Kozloduy nuclear plant. In 2014, Bulgaria selected Westinghouse to build a 7th unit at Kozloduy and offered the company the possibility to take a 49% stake in the project. The preliminary shareholder agreement on the project expired in 2015 and the project, which still needs a strategic investor, remains in limbo.

BP-operated Ghazeer field in Oman produces first gas

BP, Petronas and Makarim Gas Development have started production at the Ghazeer gas field (phase 2), located in block 61, in Oman. Total production from the block 61 is expected to reach 1.5 bcf/d (15.5 bcm/year) with more than 65,000 bbl/d of associated condensate. Block 61 is operated by BP (60%), together with Makarim Gas Development, an affiliate of Oman’s national oil company (30%), and Petronas (10%), through PC Oman Ventures. The Khazzan gas field (phase 1), which has a production capacity of 1 bcf/d (10.3 bcm/year) was brought online in September 2017.
