The European Commission unveils a regional strategy for energy efficiency

The European Commission has unveiled its Renovation Wave Strategy to improve the energy performance of buildings, which intends to at least double renovation rates in the next decade and to make sure renovations lead to higher energy and resource efficiency. 35 million buildings could be renovated by 2030. The strategy focuses on three areas: decarbonising heating and cooling; tackling energy poverty and worst-performing buildings; and renovating public buildings (schools, hospitals and administrative buildings).

The government of Ireland raise carbon tax by by €7.5/tCO2 to €33.5/tCO2

The government of Ireland has increased the carbon tax by €7.5/tCO2 to €33.5/tCO2. Consequently, fuel prices are expected to increase by €2.1c/l for gasoline and €2.45c/l for diesel. To help vulnerable households, the fuel allowance will be increased by €3.5 to €24 per week.

Ethiopia plans to unbundle state-owned Ethiopian Electric Power

The Ethiopian government is considering unbundling the national power utility Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP), by separating transmission and generation activities to ensure an equal access of independent power producers (IPPs) to the grid. EEP has an installed capacity of 4.2 GW and owns more than 17,000 km of transmission lines.

Western Australia may shut down 520 MW of coal-fired capacity by 2025

Western Australia’s first Whole of System Plan, which provides a 20-year outlook on the future of the South West Interconnected System (SWIS), foresees that 520 MW to 890 MW of the state’s coal-fired power capacity may face economic closure by 2025. The government plans to shut down the two units of the Muja C coal-fired power plant, which totals 392 MW, in 2022 and 2024.

EDF revises upwards its French nuclear generation forecast for 2020

EDF has revised upward its nuclear generation forecast for 2020 in France, to around 325-335 TWh (+3 to 6%). The output estimate for 2021 and 2022 remains unchanged, between 330 TWh and 360 TWh in 2021 and 2022.

Indian regulator clears Adani-Total solar joint venture

The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has approved the acquisition of Adani Green Energy 23 Limited’s (AGE23L’s) solar power projects in operation, corresponding to a total capacity of 2,148 MW across 11 Indian states by a 50-50 joint venture between Total, through Total Solar Singapore, and AGEL. In February 2020, Total and AGEL agreed to create a 50-50 joint venture, which will take over AGEL’ solar projects in operation (2,353 MW, of which 205 MW have already been transferred to the JV).

The 10 bcm/year TAP gas pipeline between Greece and Italy is complete

The Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP), which will transport 10 bcm/year of natural gas from the Shah Deniz II field in the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea to Europe, is complete. The interconnection point between the TAP pipeline and the gas transmission system of Snam Rete Gas in Puglia (Italy) is scheduled to be completed and ready to transport gas by mid-November 2020. The 878 km long pipeline connects with the Trans Anatolian Pipeline (TANAP) at the Turkish-Greek border in Kipoi, crosses Greece and Albania and the Adriatic Sea, before coming ashore in Southern Italy.

Enercon wins a new order for a 400 MW wind project in Vietnam

The German wind turbines manufacturer Enercon has signed a supply contract with the Trungnam Group for the 400 MW Ea Nam onshore wind project in the Dak Lak province (Vietnam). The wind project entered construction in 2020 and is scheduled to be commissioned in 2021.

Russian regulator allows start-up at Leningrad II-2 nuclear reactor

The Russian Federal Service for Environmental, Technological and Nuclear Supervision (Rostekhnadzor) has authorised power start-up at the second VVER-1200 reactor of the Leningrad II nuclear power plant in Sosnovy Bor, in western Russia. In July 2020, the Russian nuclear company Rosatom started to load fuel into the unit, marking the kickoff of the physical start-up to the reactor.
