EDPR plans to develop 900 MW of wind capacity in Greece

Portugal’s renewable energy group EDP Renováveis (EDPR) has signed an agreement with the Greek infrastructure group Ellaktor to jointly develop an onshore wind portfolio with a capacity of 900 MW. The wind projects are currently under different development stages and will strengthen EDPR’s assets in Greece. EDPR already contracted 152 MW in recent wind auctions to start operations in 2021 and 2022.

Czechia’s ČEZ will sell an portfolio of power assets in Romania

Macquarie Infrastructure and Real Assets (MIRA), through a consortium led by Macquarie European Infrastructure Fund 6, has signed an agreement to acquire the 622 MW Fantanele Cogealac onshore wind complex in Romania, owned by the Czech state-owned power utility ČEZ Group. In addition, the consortium bought an integrated energy infrastructure portfolio, which includes an 86,665 kilometre regulated electricity distribution network (Distribuție Oltenia) and an electricity and gas supply business with 1.4 million residential and industrial connections in the South West of Romania.

China’s CNOOC plans to raise gas’ share to half of output by 2035

The Chinese state-owned oil and gas company CNOOC intends to raise the share of natural gas to 50% of its total production by 2035 by accelerating exploration and production both in China and overseas. Currently gas accounts for 21% of its total hydrocarbon production. The company also plans to expand its offshore wind power business, to contribute to China’s national carbon neutrality target by 2060.

The EU is missing its 2020 target for electricity cross-border capacity

According to the European Union (EU) Agency for the Cooperation of Energy Regulators (ACER), the amount of cross-border capacity available for trade among Member States remains insufficient to meet the minimum EU target of 70% by 2020. Cross-zonal capacity increased by 3% in 2019 compared to 2018 due to border-specific improvements (Poland-Czech Republic/Germany/Slovakia, Austrian borders, Greece-Italy, Bulgaria-Romania and Germany-Denmark).

Iberdrola submits a 1.3 GW offshore wind project in New York (US)

The Spanish energy group Iberdrola, through Vineyard Wind, its 50:50 joint venture with Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), has submitted a bid in the second offshore wind solicitation held by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) in New York (United States), in an attempt to achieve 9,000 MW of offshore wind power generation by 2035. Vineyard Wind’s proposal entails a project, Liberty Wind, with a total capacity of 1.3 GW. The offshore wind project would be located 84 miles (135 km) east of Montauk Point.

Santos completes test for a 1.7 Mt/year CCS project in Australia

The Australian independent gas producer Santos has completed the final field trial for the Moomba carbon capture and storage (CCS) project in South Australia. It aims at capturing the 1.7 Mt/year of CO2 currently separated from gas and to reinject it into a former gas reservoir. The project could be expanded at a later stage to a capacity of 20 Mt/year. In March 2020, Santos signed a preliminary, non-binding agreement with BP to finance the project.

Poland seeks approval from EU for state aid to its nuclear programme

The Polish government is seeking approval from the European Commission for state-aid to build a nuclear power plant. Poland plans to develop a nuclear power project with a capacity of 1 to 1.6 GW and that could start commercial operations in 2033. At a later stage, Poland plans to deploy 6-9 GW of nuclear capacity, requiring a total investment of PLN150bn (€33bn).

NHPC intends to build a 600 MW solar plant in Uttar Pradesh (India)

The Indian state-owned hydropower company NHPC intends to develop a 600 MW ultra mega solar power plant in Deoria district of Uttar Pradesh (northern India). NHPC plans to develop the project in a joint venture with the Uttar Pradesh government or through a special purpose vehicle and aims to complete the project by the end of 2022 or early 2023.

France awards 599 MW of solar and wind projects through tenders

The French Ministry for the Ecological Transition (MTE) has unveiled the results of the tenders for ground-mounted solar PV projects, onshore wind projects and self-consumption solar PV projects. For the ground-mounted solar PV call for tenders, 45 projects totalling 332 MW were selected at an average price of €57.4/MWh (-7.4% compared to the previous session).

Indonesia plans to introduce feed-in tariffs for certain renewable projects

The Indonesian government plans to introduce a simplified pricing for electricity from renewable sources, including a feed-in tariff system for some power plants, to encourage more investment in the sector. The national energy policy revision (Regulation No. 79/2014) sets a target of 23% of renewables in the total primary energy supply by 2025 (excluding traditional biomass), equivalent to about 41 GW.
