China plans to stop subsidy for offshore wind and CSP in 2021

China has set aside CNY1.5bn (US$217m) to finance new solar power projects in 2020. A third of funding will go to distributed power projects for residential users, whereas two-thirds of it will be divided between large-scale solar plants and distributed power projects for industrial and commercial customers. In addition, China has decided to end subsidies for new offshore wind power and concentrated solar power (CSP) projects to reduce a subsidy payment backlog of at least CNY100bn (US$14.4bn).

Spain declares climate emergency and targets climate neutrality by 2050

The new Spanish government has declared a "climate emergency", announcing that it will set 30 priority lines of actions to fight climate change. A law on climate will be referred to Parliament to reach zero net emissions by 2050, a 100% renewable power supply system, zero-emission transports (for passenger cars and commercial vehicles), and a carbon-neutral agricultural sector. In addition, Spain will present its second National Climate Change Adaptation Plan that will include the review of impact indicators.

ANEEL selects 58 power projects (1.2 GW) in 2019 A-6 auction (Brazil)

The National Electric Energy Agency of Brazil (ANEEL) has approved 58 projects in the A6 power auction for new power projects to be commissioned within 6 years (as of January 2025). Overall, 39 wind projects were selected (901 MW), along with one 30 MW solar PV project, 16 hydropower projects (179 MW) and two thermal power projects (75 MW), corresponding to a total capacity of 1,185 MW.

Angola plans to list 30% of oil and gas company Sonangol by 2022

According to the Angolan Minstry of Mineral Resources and Petroleum, Angola could list 30% of its national oil company Sonangol by 2022. The introduction of the company to the stock exchange is conditioned to its reform and the privatisation of its non-core business. In addition, the government intends to give priority to Sonangol’s employees and to Angolan nationals to buy shares in the state-owned company.

Galp Energia (Portugal) will buy ACS’s solar assets in Spain (2.9 GW)

Portuguese oil and gas company Galp has reached an agreement with the Spanish construction company ACS Group to acquire ACS’ portfolio of solar projects in Spain, including 900 MW in operation and 2 GW in the pipeline. The total installed capacity of the solar power plants included in the transaction will reach 2.9 GW in 2023. The transaction is estimated at €2.2bn, including the acquisition, development and construction of the projects.

Indian group Adani targets 18 GW of renewable power capacity by 2025

Indian group Adani aims to become the world’s largest solar power company by 2025 and the biggest renewable energy firm‎ by 2030. Adani Power’s current renewable capacity, which stands at 2.5 GW, is expected to more than double in 2020, with 2.9 GW under construction. It should reach 18 GW by 2025. The group plans to dedicate 70% of its capital expenditure into renewables and energy-efficient systems and will raise the capacity of its solar cell and manufacturing plant in Mundra from 1.3 GW to 3.5 GW.

Brazilian crude oil production rose by 7.8% in 2019 to over 2.7 mb/d

According to the National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP), Brazil’s oil production increased by 7.8% in 2019 to reach 1.018 Gbl (2.789 mb/d), including 634 mbl in pre-salt areas. Total gas production also increased significantly during 2019 (+9.5%).

Renewables rose to 18% of EU final energy consumption in 2018

According to Eurostat, the share of renewable energy in the gross final energy consumption of the European Union (EU) rose from 17.5% in 2017 to 18% in 2018, progressing towards the target of 20% of renewable energy by 2020 and at least 32% by 2030.

Forecasts

Canada forecasts 35% increase in gas production between 2020 and 2040

The Canada Energy Regulator (CER) has released long-term gas production outlook for Canada. Marketable gas production is expected to decline in the short term due to continued low prices, from 15.9 bcf/d (450 mcm/d, or 164 bcm/year) expected in 2020 to 15.6 bcf/d (441 mcm/d, or 161 bcm/year) in 2025.

Over 7.8 GW of renewable projects proposed in Chile at the end of 2019

According to the ERNC Report of the National Energy Commission (CNE) of Chile, 107 renewable power generation projects with a cumulated installed capacity of 7,825 MW and worth US$14.5bn were in the environmental qualification stage within the Environmental Impact Assessment Service (SEIA) at the end of 2019.
