Uzbekistan plans to add 5 GW of solar and 3 GW of wind capacity by 2030

The Ministry of Energy of Uzbekistan has unveiled its "Concept of providing the Republic of Uzbekistan with electric energy for 2020-2030", in which it plans to increase the installed capacity by more than 16 GW to over 29 GW and to nearly double its power generation to over 120 TWh in 2030. In particular, Uzbekistan plans to build 1.5 GW of hydropower, 5 GW of solar and 3 GW of wind capacity by 2030, in order to cover 22% of its power mix with wind and solar by 2030 (from 0 in 2019).

NYSERDA (US) postpones its next 1-2.5 GW offshore wind tender

The New York Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) has decided to defer its 2020 solicitation for at least 1 GW and up to 2.5 GW of offshore wind capacity, due to the COVID-19 crisis. The tender was allowed by the New York Public Service Commission (PSC) and was expected to be issued in July 2020. The NYSERDA now plans to issue it in coordination with a US$200m solicitation to upgrade New York ports.

Cameroon opens state-owned power TSO’s shareholding to private investors

The government of Cameroon has agreed to open the share capital of the National Electricity Transmission Company (Sonatrel), which is 100% state-owned, to private investors. Created in 2015, Sonatrel operates, maintains and develops the power transmission network and its interconnections with neighbouring grids.

Total seeks license to sell electricity to large customers in Australia

Total has applied to the Australian Energy Regulator AER for an electricity retailer license, as the company aims to reach 9 million electricity customers worldwide by 2023. Through its Total Eren subsidiary, the company is currently building a 256 MW solar project in Australia, which should generate around 2 TWh/year of electricity.

Renewables reached 17.2% of final energy consumption in France in 2019

According to the French General Commission for Sustainable Development, the share of renewables in the gross final energy consumption reached 17.2% in 2019, according to provisional estimates. This share has increased by 8 percentage points since 2005, thanks to the surge in the gross final consumption of renewables (+ 129 TWh since 2005, i.e. an increase of 72%), and the drop in gross final energy consumption (- 144 TWh since 2005, i.e. a decrease of 7%).

POGC will start a gas processing plant at South Pars 14 (Iran) in 2021

Pars Oil and Gas Company (POGC) plans to complete the installation of the gas processing plant at the 14th phase of the South Pars gas project in southern Iran by the end of June 2021. The project’s engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) for the so-called refinery is currently around 83% complete. Four platform adding 14 mcm/d of gas each to the field’s production were commissioned between the summer 2018 and February 2020, raising the production from the offshore section of the phase 14 to 56 mcm/d (20 bcm/year).

Saipem will build part of the Baltic Pipe gas pipeline (Denmark-Poland)

The Polish gas transmission system operator (TSO) Gaz-System has awarded a €280m contract to Saipem to build a section of the 10 bcm/year Baltic Pipe gas pipeline project between Denmark and Poland.

DEWA signs PPA for 900 MW fifth phase of Dubai solar project (UAE)

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has signed a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for the 900 MW 5th phase of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum solar power plant in Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). In November 2019, a consortium led by ACWA Power and Gulf Investment Corporation was selected as the preferred bidder to develop the 5th phase, a solar PV project, offering a price of less than US$1.70c/kWh.

Contractor selection starts for East Med gas pipeline (Israel-Greece)

IGI Poseidon, the joint venture of Greek gas utility DEPA and Italian energy group Edison, has launched a tender to pre-select two contractors to design and build four offshore sections (total length of 1,470 km) of the 10 bcm/year East Med gas pipeline project for a budget of approximately €3bn.
