South Carolina regulator approves SCANA-Dominion Energy merger (US)
The Public Service Commission of South Carolina (SCPSC) has cleared the takeover of SCANA by the US energy utility Dominion Energy, with conditions to be outlined later as part of a written order that is to be issued by the end of December 2018. Besides, it has also approved Dominion Energy’s latest customer benefits plan. Dominion Energy has received all the other required regulatory approvals and now only awaits the SCPSC final written order prior to closing the merger.

The combined company will carry out operations in 18 states from Connecticut to California. It will have an installed power capacity of 33,000 MW and will operate 93,600 miles (150 600 km) of power transmission and distribution lines along with 106,400 miles (171,200 km) of gas pipelines and 1 Tcf (28 bcm) of gas storage capacity. Besides, the new company will also deliver energy to approximately 6.5 million regulated customer accounts in eight US states.

Cheniere Energy (US) will sell 1.1 Mt/year of LNG to Petronas (Malaysia)
Cheniere Energy’s affiliate Sabine Pass liquefaction has signed an LNG sales a purchase agreement (SPA) with the Malaysian state-held oil and gas company Petronas. Around 1.1 Mt/year of LNG will be shipped from the sixth train of Cheniere Energy’s Sabine Pass liquefaction project on a free on board (FOB) basis for a 20-year term following the date of first commercial delivery. Lithuania’s Klaipedos Nafta will import LNG until at least 2044
The Lithuanian Parliament has voted to operate the country’s existing LNG import facility at least until 2044. Read more

Equinor starts production at Aasta Hansteen gas field (Norway)
Norwegian energy company Equinor (formerly known as Statoil) and its partners have started production from the Aasta Hansteen gas field on the Norwegian continental shelf (NCS). The produced gas will be transported via the Polarled pipeline to the Nyhamna terminal in Aukra (both operated by state-run transmission operator Gassco) for further export to the United Kingdom. Sumitomo acquires 29.5% stake in two offshore wind projects (France)
Japanese integrated industrial group Sumitomo Corporation has acquired a 29.5% equity stake in EMYN (Eoliennes en Mer Iles d’Yeu et de Noirmoutier) and EMDT (Éoliennes en Mer Dieppe et Le Tréport), the two project companies developing the Dieppe-Le Tréport and Yeu-Noirmoutier offshore wind projects. Eni approves development plan for Merakes offshore gas project (Indonesia)
Italian energy giant Eni has cleared the investment plan for the Merakes project in the East Sepinggan PSC (Makassar Strait, East Kalimantan) in Indonesia, following the approval received by the Minister of Energy of Indonesia in early December 2018. Read more

Cambodia’s 400 MW Lower Sesan-2 hydropower plant comes onstream
Cambodia’s 400 MW Lower Sesan-2 hydropower dam on the Se San river in the northeastern province of Stung Treng has begun to produce electricity. The project, constructed on a build-operate-transfer (BOT) basis, is expected to produce 1.9 TWh/year. It entails five turbines worth 80 MW each. Read more

Nexans installs subsea cable of MONITA interconnector (Italy/Montenegro)
French copper and optical fiber cable manufacturer Nexans has completed the installation and testing of a 445 km subsea and land mass-impregnated 500 kV HVDC (high-voltage direct current) cable for the 500 MW MONITA (MONtenegro – ITAly) power interconnection project. It will link the Cepagatti converter station in Pescara (Italy) to the Kotor converter station near Budva (Montenegro). Read more
