PHD STUDENTS, LEADERSHIP FOR THE ECOZOIC,
UNIVERSITY OF VERMONT

The University of Vermont (UVM) in Burlington, Vermont and McGill University in Montreal, Quebec seek up to 6 PhD students for Fall 2022 to comprise the third cohort of Leadership for the Ecozoic (L4E) fellows. This third cohort will join the current L4E community of 18 PhD fellows.

Leadership for the Ecozoic (L4E) offers exceptional graduate students the opportunity to collaborate in enabling a socially just transition to a mutually enhancing human-Earth relationship. The UVM node of the L4E focuses on Ecological Economics. We particularly seek applicants to the UVM program in Sustainable Development Policy, Economics and Governance (SDPEG), but will also accept applicants to other programs on the condition that candidates identify an advisor aligned with the principles of the ecozoic and of ecological economics and willing to actively contribute to the L4E initiative. Successful candidates will receive four years of funding to pursue their PhD while actively engaging in the L4E inter-university initiative via coursework, workshops, lectures, retreats, and other collaborative activities. We have already arranged tuition waivers for candidates accepted to the SDPEG program, and will request waivers in other programs as needed, but they are not guaranteed. Regardless of the department, UVM L4E students will receive broad, transdisciplinary education in the biophysical, institutional, behavioral and ethical foundations of the human economy, and training in the policies, practices and theories required to promote a socially just sustainability transition. Students will have the opportunity to collaborate with L4E counterparts in McGill University’s Anthropology for the Ecozoic (A4E) node and we encourage students with a particular interest in anthropology to apply directly to the A4E.

Webinar Series: Grappling with the Question of Sustainable Consumption in the Global South

28 September 2021, 1:00PM UTC / 6:30PM India

How to talk about sustainable consumption in the Global South? This question is often a  non-starter. Mainstream sustainability discourse usually holds that the Global South is poor, and therefore, this question is irrelevant. While it most certainly is a question for the “rich world” and the rich world needs to take primary responsibility, the Global South is also urgently confronted by it in unique ways.

This three-part series of interactive webinars invites you to join scholars and activists to explore and advance an appropriate vocabulary and knowledge-action agenda for sustainable consumption in the Global South.

EVALUATING POLICY PACKAGES FOR LOW-CARBON TRANSITIONS – PRINCIPLES AND APPLICATIONS

Guest Editor: Prof dr HRJ Vollebergh

Special Issue Ecologic Economics – Invitation to Submit Papers

Transitions and policy rationales

Limiting global warming to no more than 2°C has become the de facto target for global climate policy. Such an ambitious target requires countries to introduce ambitious transition policies. Such dramatic emission reductions require the mass deployment of low-, zero- and negative emission technologies in all sectors of the economy. While some progress in some sectors, like electricity, are already underway, others such as industry, transport, or agriculture still face huge challenges. The current debate on the European Green Deal is just one example of how difficult such transitions may be. This also relates to a growing recognition of the interdependency of the many environmental challenges we face at the same time including such diverse issues as the availability of physical resources and local air pollution.

ISEE-ESEE-DEGROWTH 2021 – held July 5-8 was a major success. Around 2,000 registered attendees, several hundred attending each day in the 13 parallel sessions with nearly 400 presenters.  The only problem was which of the extraordinary presentations to attend! This was a first big online conference for ISEE, and a first combining with ESEE and Degrowth Network. It was generously and very efficiently hosted by Manchester University

The big discussion is: What next?  Online? Hybrid? In person?

ISEE would like to co-host with one of the regional societies and is looking for potential collaborators.  ISEE would very much welcome feedback on the conference, so email us or Tweet if you have ideas or comments.

Recordings of the plenaries and some of the nearly 200 sessions will be posted on the ISEE YouTube channel.

This podcast aims at communicating ecological economics ideas in order to open them to critical discussion and test their applicability, from global problems to people’s everyday lives. May 2021 Population Matters Update

Message from Robin Maynard, Director, Population Matters

Ploughing lonely furrows, casting pearls…

One of the organisations I worked for before joining Population Matters was the Soil Association. As with seeking to communicate the benefits of achieving a smaller,  sustainable human population, promoting the benefits of organic food and farming was a lonely and much contested furrow to plough at times!

The exponents of mainstream, ‘conventional’ agriculture (in reality, completely antithetical to the conventions and principles of good husbandry) did all they could to denigrate organic farming, dismissing it as ‘muck and magic’, claiming there was no evidence of any benefits.

TT Assistant Professor Integrated Land Use
and Exosystem Services

The University of Groningen in the Netherlands invites applications for a tenure track position.

We are looking for an early-career academic who is interested to start a tenure-track that focuses on education and who can strengthen our teaching and research in the field of energy and environmental sciences. In particular, we are looking for a candidate with expertise in societal and socio-economic aspects of the way that land use has to be integrated with ecosystem services such as agriculture, cattle farming and/or water management. The societal aspects of such ecosystem services are accompanied with local as well as national and global challenges that come with changing from more classical (fossil) energy sources to renewable energy. These challenges are even more pressing when approaching the ecological and societal disturbances of intensified farming and unbalanced water use from a sustainability perspective. Discussions on such topics often show contrasting conclusions depending e.g. on the point of departure, being more national (NL), more Europe-based, or more globally-oriented. This ensures a rather dynamic research field that also brings challenges to teaching this in a well-balanced way.

Global warming is the biggest challenge of all time. It impacts every living species. However, the inherent dangers are very difficult to comprehend, as such, people brush it off as one more issue in life that will somehow be handled, fixed, no worries, human ingenuity will prevail.

Call for Abstracts on Sustainable Economic Models

Opportunity to contribute to a conference track and PhD workshop at ISDRS2021 (12-15th July 2021)

Goals and Objectives of the Track

Following the 2008 economic crisis and with the extraordinary impacts of the 2020 COVID19 pandemic, the limits of the growth-oriented capitalist economic paradigm have become very clear. Unquestioned economic growth, the environmental costs of production and consumption processes, and the social inequalities resulting from these standard industrial practices cannot be sustained.

This unsustainable development is not limited to the traditional capitalist countries but the whole global capitalist system, including post-communist countries, emerging economies and developing countries. Green economy and green growth suggest promising adaptations of the global growth-oriented system but the present climate and biodiversity crises call for transformations.

Alternative economic approaches and paradigms have emerged at different scales that speak to emerging de-growth debates and seek to oppose or subvert the growth-driven capitalist paradigm. This theme considers new, alternative, diverse, and socially just economic development both in the global North and South.

This track welcomes contributions to a variety of topics (for details see https://2021.isdrsconferences.org/sustainable-economic-models/).
